TikTok removes over 590,000 videos in Kenya for violating guidelines

TikTok has been facing increased scrutiny in Kenya following a March 2025 investigation that found minors were vulnerable to sexualised livestreams on the platform.

TikTok removed more than 590,000 videos in Kenya between April and June 2025 for violating its community guidelines, the company has revealed in its Q2 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report (CGER).

The report notes that a total of 592,037 videos were pulled down from the platform during the period, with 92.9 per cent of the content taken down before being viewed, and 96.3 per cent were removed within 24 hours of posting.

This marked a significant increase compared with previous periods, with over 450,000 videos removed in Q1 2025 and more than 360,000 in Q2 2024.

"This effort aligns with TikTok's global moderation impact," the social media platform said in the report.

TikTok has been facing increased scrutiny in Kenya following a March 2025 investigation by the BBC that found minors were vulnerable to sexualised livestreams on the platform.

In response, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) issued directives requiring TikTok to remove all such content, review gaps in its moderation systems and intensify efforts to educate the public on protecting children online.

The surge in takedowns reported in the Q2 report appears to reflect the company's response to these regulatory demands.

Globally, TikTok removed over 189 million videos during the period under review, representing just 0.7 per cent of all content uploaded. Of these, 99.1 per cent were detected proactively, 94.4 per cent were removed within 24 hours, and 163.9 million videos were automatically taken down by AI systems.

Additionally, the platform pulled down 76,991,660 fake accounts and 25,904,708 accounts suspected to belong to users under the age of 13.

"By integrating advanced automated moderation technologies with the expertise of thousands of trust and safety professionals, TikTok enables faster and consistent removal of content that violates its community guidelines," the company said.

TikTok also reported actions under its live monetisation guidelines, including warnings and demonetization of 2,321,813 live sessions and 1,040,356 live creators.

"The warnings serve as an opportunity to educate creators when their content may breach 'Live' monetisation policies, allowing them to make necessary changes," the platform said.

Further, the company also encouraged users to report content, comments, or accounts that appear to breach its community guidelines.

"By working together with our community, TikTok is fostering a safe digital space conducive for a thriving society to flourish and individuals to share enriching experiences," said TikTok.
